The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes way back into ancient history, in truth as far back as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. He describes how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient chefs used many herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
