The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found back into the far past, in fact as far back as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `wonderful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have some interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the rich people of the period. Over the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. When we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are greatly in demand as a result of better eduction, more leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of TV brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
