The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` way back into distant history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef informs us how the early Romans used a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, rue and dill. During the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West competed to offer the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day. The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
