The History of Recipes

It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, sadly, these early cook books were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated.

Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. He also describes how the ancient Romans used many different herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example thyme, fennel and parsley.

Later, there are a couple of interesting cookery books published in the 1300s - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they have no connection with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of the time.

Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and spices from the Middle-East, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

For the decades that followed, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group.

By the time we get to the 20th century, recipe publications were increasing in popularity as a result of increased literacy, more free time and having more money.

The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on our site.
