The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were a couple of books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the spicy food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menues of the rich. Over the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day. The introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Asparagus Tacos recipe.
