The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into starters, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. He also recounts how the ancient cooks made use of a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like bay, rue and parsley. Over the next few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. When we get to the 1900s, cooking publications were highly popular as a result of increased literacy, increased leisure time and being a little richer. The arrival of TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Asparagus Tacos recipe.
