The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Closer to modern times, there were two books from the 14th Century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of that period. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications are starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
