The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, we find a couple of interesting books from the 1300s ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are not about the spicy food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of that period. For the centuries that followed, the families of Europe competed with each other to offer the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were in great demand, due to better eduction, leisure time and having more money. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
