The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes back into distant history, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius recounts how the Romans made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to an eruption in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. When we get to the twentieth century, cook books were highly popular due to better eduction, people having more leisure time and having more money. The TV revolution gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
