The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these old recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Later, there were two interesting books which date from the 1300s : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an explosion in cookery books, many of which are now in private collections. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
