The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be traced back into distant history, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, old records were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have two interesting cookery books dating from the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an eruption in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. The TV revolution brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
