The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of `recipes` far back into history, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early records were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef informs us how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, mint and asafoetida. For the centuries that followed, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
