The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later, we find two interesting cookery books which were published in the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the time. For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
