The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be traced far back into the far past, in fact as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the chefs of Roman times made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and tastes was responsible for an outbreak in recipe manuscripts, many of which are now in private cookery archives. When we get to the 1900s, cookery publications were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Banana Blueberry Muffins No. 1796 recipe.
