The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these old cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are some tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two recipe books dating from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals served to the wealthy. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new herbs and spices caused a surge in recipe manuscripts, most of which are now in academic collections. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
