The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old records were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into starters, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different herbs, including some familiar names such as thyme, fennel and dill. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for a surge in manuscripts on food, most of which still exist in academic collections. The introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
