The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existance of recipes way back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, sadly, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the chefs of Roman times made use of many spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like bay, mint and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy lands, including rosemary and coriander. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in private libraries. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookery publications were in high demand, mostly due to better eduction, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
