The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into history, certainly as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are some clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find a couple of recipe books dating from the 1300s - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the time.

Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an increase in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in private libraries.

Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time.

When we get to the twentieth century, cook books are highly popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, leisure time and disposable income.

The TV revolution gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site.
