The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes way back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a series of tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have two interesting recipe books dating from the 14th Century - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the upper classes of that time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe tried to serve up the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. When we get to the twentieth century, recipe books were increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
