The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be tracked back into antiquity, in fact as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are some tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are some books published in the 1300s ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and wealthy people of that period. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. When we get to the twentieth century, cooking books were greatly in demand as a result of more people being able to read, leisure time and having more money. |
