The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes back into the distant past, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old records were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example thyme, rue and dill. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the East, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created a torrent in manuscripts on food, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
