The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. In practice though, these, early recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the cooks of Roman times made use of a wide range of spices, including some familiar names like thyme, fennel and dill. For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of the West strove to serve the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
