The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes far back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these early records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find a couple of cookery books from the 1300s ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and powerful of the period. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to a surge in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
