The History of Recipes

It is actually possible to track the history of recipes back into the distant past, certainly as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, these, ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`.

As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also describes how the ancient cooks used many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like bay, rue and asafoetida.

Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes caused an eruption in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in private libraries.

During the following few centuries, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the advent of the 1900s, recipe publications were in high demand, mostly as a result of increased literacy, more spare time and having more disposable income.

The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site.
