The History of Recipes

Historians have traced the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`.

As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have two interesting cookery books dating from the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the time.

Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on food, some of which are kept safe in private libraries.

During the following few centuries, the powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes of the day.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site.
