The History of Recipes

Experts have proved the existance of recipes way back into history, certainly as far back as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, in Roman times 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient Romans made use of many aromatic flavours, including some familiar names such as thyme, rue and asafoetida.

During the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now.
