The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be observed back into distant history, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have some interesting books which appeared in the 14th Century - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the period. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an outbreak in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. Over the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cookery and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of TV brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
