Ingredients
2 lb beef top round steak, cut into 1/8 thick slices
1/4 cup onions, chopped
1 tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp paprika
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1 bay leaf
2 cl garlic, minced
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1/4 cup tarragon vinegar
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
2 drop liquid smoke
Directions
Combine ingredients in slow cooker; cover. Cook on low for 4 to 6
hours, depending on how well done you want meat. Remove bay leaf
before serving. Serve by itself or on rolls. To save time, use meat
that has been cut up for stir fry. If you're cutting your own, it's
easier if the meat is slightly frozen when you slice it.

The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` way back into history, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were divided into starters, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different herbs, including some that we all recognise such as bay, mint and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices was responsible for an explosion in recipe publications, most of which are now in private collections. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery publications are starting to become popular due to increased literacy, people having increased spare time and a general increase in wealth. |
