The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated. Closer to modern times, there were two books which appeared in the 1300s ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the indian food that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals served to the upper classes of the period. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the Middle-East, such as basil and coriander. These new foods and spices caused an eruption in recipe publications, most of which still exist in private collections. During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
