The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` far back into distant history, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also tells us how the cooks of his times used many different herbs and spices, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and asafoetida. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
