The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavours, including a few you will know such as thyme, rue and dill.
For the centuries that followed, the powerful families of the West tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.
By the time we get to the 20th century, recipe books are starting to become popular as a result of more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more money to spend.
The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.
Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site.
We hope you enjoy this Basic Meat Loaf recipe.
