The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into antiquity, certainly as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. In practice though, sadly, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Moving on, there are a couple of cookery books published in the 14th Century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of those days. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused a surge in books on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
