The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be found back into ancient history, in fact as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Much later, in Roman times a man called Apicius created some documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient chefs used a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and dill. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of the West strove to offer the most extravagent meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
