The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these early cook books were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `wonderful`. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius describes how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of herbs, including some that we all recognise like bay, rue and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, such as parsley and basil. These new foods and spices created a torrent in recipe publications, most of which still exist in private libraries. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking publications were in high demand, due to better eduction, people having more free time and having more money. The introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Bean Burrito Casserole recipe.
