The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes far back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. Moving on, there were two recipe books which were published in the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the time. During the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, cookery publications are highly popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, more free time and disposable income. |
