The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, generally, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, there are a couple of recipe books from the 1300s - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the upper classes of the time. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe competed to serve the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it was during the 19th century that cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe publications are highly popular due to increased literacy, more free time and a general increase in wealth. |
