The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example bay, fennel and dill. During the following few hundred years, the families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks were starting to become popular as a result of better eduction, increased leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
