The History of Recipes

Written recipes as a concept can be tracked far back into the distant past, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, these, old cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`.

Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius also describes how the Roman chefs made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and asafoetida.

Over the following few centuries, the families of Europe competed to offer the most exotic meals, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

The introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now.
