The History of Recipes

We are able to trace the history of meal recipes way back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, these, old records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `wonderful`.

As we move on, there were a couple of recipe books which appeared in the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich people of those days.

During the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

By the advent of the 20th century, cookery publications were highly popular mostly as a result of better eduction, leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

The revolution that is television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this.
