The History of Recipes

It is possible to track the history of written recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early records were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated.

Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were split into appetizers, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and dill.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to a surge in books on cookery, many of which still exist in private libraries.

For the decades that followed, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing the recipes of their peers.

The arrival of television brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site.
