The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` back into history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also recounts how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many herbs, including many that are still in use today like thyme, rue and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an outbreak in books on cookery, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications are in great demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, leisure time and having more money to spend. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
