The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of meal recipes back into distant history, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, early records were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, something we still use today. He also informs us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including a few you will know such as basil, rue and dill. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, testing, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books were greatly in demand mostly due to more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and disposable income. |
