The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be found far back into distant history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful. During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also tells us how the cooks of his times used many different herbs, including a few you will know such as basil, fennel and dill. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find some interesting books from the 1300s ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menues of the upper classes of that period. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a torrent in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. When we get to the 20th century, cookbooks are greatly in demand due to increased literacy, more spare time and disposable income. The arrival of TV gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
