The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he describes how the Roman cooks made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, fennel and parsley. For the decades that followed, the upper-class families of the West strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
