The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked way back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also recounts how the early Romans used many different aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, mint and dill.

As we move on, we have two interesting recipe books dating from the fourteenth century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and powerful.

Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an explosion in recipe manuscripts, many of which still exist in private cookery archives.

The revolution that is television brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this.
