The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, generally, these ancient cook books were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. Moving on, we find some books which appeared in the 1300s : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful of that period. During the following few centuries, the powerful and wealthy strove to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the 1900s, cook books were greatly in demand mostly as a result of better eduction, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
