The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into the far past, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, mostly, these early cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. Moving on, we find a couple of cookery books which date from the 1300s : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals eaten by the nobility of that period. During the following few centuries, the families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe books really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks were highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, leisure time and disposable income. The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Brown Bag Gourmet Chili recipe.
