The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be tracked back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he describes how the ancient Romans used a good variety of herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like thyme, mint and dill. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
