The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes back into distant history, at least as far back as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Moving on, we have a couple of interesting cookery books dating from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the rich people of the period. During the next few hundred years, the rich families of the West tried to serve the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes of the day. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications were increasing in popularity due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
