The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` far back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these old records were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. He also informs us how the chefs of Roman times made use of a wide range of spices, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, mint and dill. Later, we find a couple of recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to a surge in recipe manuscripts, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Burger Stroganoff recipe.
