The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into ancient history, in fact as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, these, early records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef tells us how the Roman chefs made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise for example basil, fennel and parsley. Later on, we have a couple of books dating from the 14th Century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals eaten by the rich people of those days. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including parsley and basil. These new culinary innovations led to an increase in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
