The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes back into the far past, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient cooks made use of many herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, mint and parsley. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have some recipe books published in the 1300s : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals cooked for the rich and wealthy people of that period. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused a surge in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are kept safe in private collections. The arrival of TV brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
