The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes far back into the distant past, certainly as far back into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he recounts how the cooks of his times made use of many herbs and spices, including some familiar names for example bay, mint and dill. Over the following few centuries, the powerful families of the West competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. The introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
