The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked far back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient Romans made use of a wide range of herbs, including some that we all recognise for example bay, fennel and dill.

Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused a torrent in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries.

When we get to the 20th century, cook books were in great demand, due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money.

The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site.
