The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes back into history, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Later on, we have a couple of cookery books which date from the fourteenth century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food cooked for the rich and wealthy people of that time. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the East, including parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an eruption in recipe publications, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. For the next few years, the wealthy families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
