The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes far back into history, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated.

Later on, we have some recipe books dating from the fourteenth century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the period.

Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an outbreak in recipe books, many of which are kept safe in private collections.

During the next few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

By the advent of the 1900s, cook books are highly popular mostly due to more people being able to read, people having more free time and having more money to spend.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading.
