The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals were split into starters, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. He also describes how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs, including many that are still in use today for example basil, fennel and dill. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of the West strove to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
