The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be traced back into history, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, these, old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are two interesting books which date from the 14th Century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they are unconnected to the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich people of that period. Over the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. However, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, recipe publications are in high demand, mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and having more disposable income. The TV revolution brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
